MTR Corporation’s Sustainability and Global Innovation teams have partnered with greentech startup Spare-it to implement a plug-and-play waste reduction and recycling tracking system at the MTR Headquarters Building. The teams collaborated closely to co-create this system which utilises IoT technology to connect over 200 ‘smart’ bins with Live Waste Intelligence Sensors. The network enabled by IoT tracks real-time waste data for the entire building, making waste management more efficient than ever before. But the benefits of this tracking system don’t stop here. This system has enabled us to be more effective in waste reduction and promoting sustainability.
Gamifying the Waste Reduction Experience
The team has taken the system to the next level by gamifying the waste reduction experience. Near-real-time data is displayed on interactive dashboards, allowing staff of different office floors to compete on their waste reduction results. This approach has increased employee engagement by creating interactive and entertaining elements in waste reduction efforts. The results are impressive – waste disposal at MTR HQ was reduced by a whopping 15% !
Through this collaboration with startup Spare-it, the usage of IoT in driving sustainability and smart city applications has been demonstrated and is a testament to the possible impact that we can make on our planet through working with partners like startups to co-create innovative solutions.
