Introducing our newest teammate, a four-legged robot train inspector! This solution stems from the latest co-creation between MTR Corporation Hong Kong Transport Services business unit’s Rolling Stock Maintenance Department and Infrastructure Maintenance Department, and robotics innovator R2C2 Limited. Utilising Boston Dynamics' robot SPOT®, this smart maintenance solution makes use of high-resolution cameras and AI technology to detect even the smallest irregularities. Our four-legged robot inspector scurries along the train's interior and exterior, capturing data and ensuring that MTR passengers experience more dependable and efficient train cars.
Thanks to the fruitful co-creation and enthusiasm of members of the Hong Kong Transport Services business unit - KH Lee, Eric Cheung, Alex Tsang, and Jack Lao – as well as San Wong, Founder of R2C2, the robot train inspector has been brought to life on MTR trains to enhance inspection quality and make commuter experience hassle-free.
One of our maintenance staff members who works with the robotic inspector says, "It's like having an extra pair of eyes on the train. The robot is fast and navigates the train very quickly. Its speed and efficiency have helped us identify and resolve potential issues in time."
The introduction of this smart maintenance solution comes with a number of advantages:
- It standardises maintenance inspection quality, boosts accuracy and efficiency, and minimises the risk of human error and fatigue, thereby ensuring that MTR trains maintain the highest standards.
- It reduces the time and cost of traditional train inspection methods and allows more frequent and thorough inspections.
The robot inspector is a proof of MTR’s commitment to innovation and implementing smart solutions, such as smart maintenance, to enhance mobility services in an effort to support the long-term growth of a smart community through co-creation.
This project is empowered by MTR Global Innovation Department.
