MTR Corporation Collaborates with Sebit to Develop Escalator Object Identification System

Did you know that small metal objects can have a big influence on the reliability of escalator operations? Let us introduce the Escalator Object Identification System (EOIS)! To eliminate the possibility of small metal objects obstructing escalator operations, MTR Corporation’s Capital Works Business Unit and a startup has co-created an AI system to ensure reliability of escalators and to enhance public safety.

Co-create with Sebit Company Limited, EOIS is a state-of-the-art computer vision and AI object detection system. This AI system, with the help of Video Content Analysis, can detect tiny metal objects such as keys, nails, coins or screws that could affect escalators' operation, preventing accidents and damage of escalators, thereby ensuring the safety of at MTR stations.

Here’s how this AI system works:

1.       EOIS utilise high-resolution cameras and Video Content Analysis, an extremely accurate AI deep learning model.

2.       When Video Content Analysis detects tiny metal items on the escalator comb plate, it will trigger an alarm.

3.       The operation team receives alert messages on their mobile devices and can remove the object before it causes the escalator to jam.

EOIS has already been installed in numerous sites with a reporting accuracy of over 95%, it has a proven track record of lowering maintenance costs, downtime and potential accidents. Thanks to the contribution of EOIS team members William Lee, Edmond Yeung, Colman Yeung and Chris Wong in developing a smart solution that ensures safety for our passengers!
